A citizens’ platform to help measure the waters of Mar Menor
A few weeks ago, researchers from the SMARTLAGOON project, led by the UCAM, trained the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and the Directorate General of the Mar Menor to learn about our app for measuring flow rates from images.
The Catholic University of Murcia meets with Photrack, a partner of the project, to explain the use of Discharge APP to the workers of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and the General Directorate of the Mar Menor. This algorithm, patented in Switzerland, obtains the velocity profile on the surface of the body of water, using an image measurement method through the movement of pixels. This application, which uses a non-intrusive technology, is completely free of charge and is available only on Android devices.
For the correct use of this tool, the H2020 SMARTLAGOON project, funded by the European Commission, needs the help of citizens for data collection, as well as of organisations involved with the Mar Menor, such as the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura or the Directorate General of the Mar Menor. All of them will be able to supply the app with videos and, therefore, with flow data at any point in the basin draining into the Mar Menor. All the data obtained will feed the algorithm developed for the future digital twin to be developed within the framework of the SMARTLAGOON project.
This bilateral visit between UCAM and the Swiss partner of the project has served to install two new cameras along the coastline of the Region. One of these cameras has been fixed in the Rambla de Mendoza and the other in the Rambla del Albujón. Both cameras are in addition to the one installed last October in the municipality of Fuente Álamo. The next step to obtain all the necessary information for the creation of the digital twin will be the launch of a data collection buoy in the Mar Menor.
